1. Throw out that mascara!

Seriously, throw it out. Keeping your mascara for more than two months can build up bacteria that you don't want to hear about. Use a permanent marker to write the date you open it on the tube, so you won't use it past its shelf life.

2. Get yourself a quality pair of UVA/UVB-approved sunglasses.

Rain or shine, UV rays do not disappear because it's cloudy. Shades don't only look great on you, they also protect your eyes more than you know. Make sure to search for the UVA/UVB label for the correct lenses.

3. Eat your veggies!

We know, we know, oldest saying in the book. However, a simple balanced diet with tons of leafy greens and foods with omega-3 fatty acids can reduce your risk of dry eyes, macular degeneration, cataracts, and so much more.

4. Wash your hands when handling contacts.

Good hygiene may seem so obvious but you'd be surprised how easy it is to forget. Contact lens solution will help kill bacteria on your lenses but that doesn't mean germs can't hitch a ride from your fingers. And, maybe keep a spare set of eyeglasses around in case there's nowhere to wash.

5. Stop relying on eye drops
