We all know that eating certain foods are good for staying fit and healthy, but some of these same foods have very important benefits when it comes to your eye health. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins A, C, and E can help reduce the risk of age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration and cataracts.

The good news is you can prepare dishes that are not only veggie-friendly and delicious, but also good for your eyes! Celebrate national vegetarian month by trying new recipes that have the following eye healthy ingredients:

Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards -They're packed with lutein and zeaxanthin—key antioxidants that help lower the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.

Carrots, pumpkin and other orange-colored fruits and vegetables - Full of beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A that gives these foods their orange hue, they help the retina and other parts of the eye to function smoothly.

Citrus and berries - Oranges, grapefruits and tomatoes are powerhouses of vitamin C, which has been shown to help reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.

Eggs - The yolk is a prime source of lutein and zeaxanthin—plus zinc, which also helps reduce your macular degeneration risk.

Almonds - They're filled with vitamin E, which helps slow macular degeneration. One handful (an ounce) provides about half of your daily dose of E.
